The Fiji Airports

The largest of all the Fiji airports is Nadi International Airport. It is located on the main Island Viti Levu about 10 minutes from Nadi Township.

Nadi International Airport is a very busy airport with a number of international flights arriving and departing daily. Nadi is also the gateway to the Islands with daily domestic services to and from these Islands and also to the capital Suva.

Nausori Airport which is the airport located about 20 minutes from Suva and is used as the airport for passengers going to and from Suva, is nothing like the size of Nadi but is also a busy little airport. It has a number of daily domestic services and there is also an international flight to Tonga departing from this airport.

The airports on the Islands I would describe more like airstrips with a check-in shed beside the runway. We regularly visit Musket Cove located on Malolo Lailai Island. The airstrip separates Musket Cove Resort and Plantation Island Resort. I always have a little laugh to myself when I am on my bike because you have to ride (or walk) across the end of the airstrip, there is however a sign that reads something like this “Watch for low flying Planes”. I am sure you get the idea of the type of set-up we are talking about a number of the runways aren’t sealed and they are very relaxed in Fiji so they aren’t all fenced off.

There are runways at a number of the Islands included some of the very remote Islands. Although they don’t have regular services flying to them it is a way to make then less remote and for dropping supplies and to use in the case of emergencies.

As you will be able to tell Nadi is the major of all the Fiji airports but most of the smaller Islands with large resorts are accessible by air with domestic services to them, charter planes or most resorts can be accessed by float planes.
