Colourful Fiji Clothing

When you walk down the street you see a vast array of colours and styles of Fiji Clothing. This is because you basically have two different cultures mixing in the community together.

Fijian Sulu The Fijian ladies typically wear very brightly coloured floral or patterned clothing, really suiting them because of their skin colour. Their dresses are normally longer and for cultural reasons they generally don’t wear clothing that is above their knees. They typically wear a Sulu Jaba. This comprises of a long skirt that is worn underneath a dress which is slightly shorter. Sometimes it will be made out of the same fabric and other times you will see them with a plain colour skirt. As I visit Fiji so often I decided to get one made for me. Although I haven’t worn it all that much, because I find it extremely hot, whenever I do wear it I always receive wonderful comments from the local Fijian ladies.

Due to the warm climate the Fijian men also wear a sulu skirt. This is a shorter skirt, worn just below the knees. On Sundays you will often see the men dressed in a sulu with a shirt, tie and a bible in their hands walking to church.

During my years travelling to the country I have seen many changes, one being the huge Western influence on the culture. As the younger generation becomes more Westernised the older more traditional clothing is becoming less popular and now you will see this age group wearing Western style clothing, including, shorts, jeans and shorter skirts.

The Fiji clothing the Indian ladies typically wear a sari. They look very beautiful in their saris, like the Fijian ladies they are often brightly coloured suiting their skin toning. A sari comprises of 5 ½ to 6 meters of fabric which is wrapped in a particular manner to form a long dress. The Indian ladies also typically wear gold jewellery to accompany their clothing.

One trip to Fiji we were invited to dinner at some Indian’s friends. To my surprise when I arrived I was welcomed then taken inside and dressed in a sari complete with all the jewellery. It was a great experience and I was amazed at how they actually wrap the sari.

The Indian men are always well groomed and will often wear long pants especially if they are going to church. Like the Fijian community the Indian culture is also becoming very Westernised so the younger generation are choosing to wear more casual, comfortable clothing.

Hope you have found this information on Fiji clothing interesting and that you will get to see and experience the colours and styles of the country when you visit.
