Want To Know More About The Fiji Culture?
The Fiji culture is a colourful nation filled with a mix of music, dance, family, food, craft and their love for sport, especially rugby. The majority of the population is a mix of Indigenous Fijian, and Indian but Fiji also has a small Chinese population which is more prominent in the capital Suva. The two main ethnic groups live relatively separately because of their different religious and cultural beliefs which are hard to blend together. Often they have specific Fijian or Indian villages each with their own primary schools but they tend to mix more as they become older, at high school and especially in the working environment. This musical nation is bought together by singing, you often hear the lovely sound of their songs echoing around the villages. The people also have strong religious beliefs, the ceremonies influenced by music and singing. Church is an important weekly event, families including very small children can be seen walking for miles to attend, dressed in their best Sunday attire.
The Fijian food is a fusion of flavours of both the cultures, the coconut and root vegetables of the Fijians and the spices and curries of the Indians. When you visit the local market you can smell the lovely aroma of the Indian spices and you will see the unique way they sell these goods.
Dance is also a very important part in both the Fijian and Indian cultures. I have been lucky enough to attend an end of year High School Graduation, a show case of both the active, fast past dance of the Indians and the traditional slower dances of the Fijians. At an event like these the students always come dressed in their appropriate cultures clothing.

Family is one of the most important parts of the Fiji culture. The Fijians often live in close nit villages with cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents, all caring and providing for each other and the village as a whole community. Art and craft is also a large part of their villages and heritage especially for the women. As you will be able to tell the Fiji culture is a combination of both the Fijian and Indian groups, each bringing something unique and special to the country.
