The Fiji Currency

The Fiji currency is their own Fijian dollar. The currency code for the country is FJD.

It is a weaker currency than both the New Zealand & Australian currencies which means you will receive more Fijian dollars for every dollar you exchange which is a bonus when you are going on holiday.

Their money is available in different denominations, the notes start with a $2, then $5, $10, $20, $50 and they have recently bought in $100 notes. They are a country that still has 1c coins then 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c and $1 coins.

When travelling to Fiji there are a couple of things you need to keep in mind. It is largely a nation that uses cash. Of course if you are staying at the resorts credit cards are widely accepted and are also generally accepted at restaurants, rental car companies, tours and activities you may choose to do. However if you plan to go into one of the local towns or buy something from the local market it is highly advisable to be prepared and take cash. You also need to be aware that the locals who sell their produce and crafts at the local markets earn very little each day. This means they generally don't have large volumes of change or larger notes as their goods normally only sell for a dollar or two. To save a little bit of embarrassment for both you and them please be prepaid if you are going to a local market and take small change. Take all your coins and then any $2, $5 & $10 notes you have to ensure they will be able to give you the correct change without having to borrow it from three different stall neighbours. I probably wouldn't even take $20 notes and definitely not $50's or $100's for the markets. If you are buying things around town in the shops $20’s or $50’s should be OK.

If you are staying at a resort and have to keep an eye on your spending it might be an idea to pay for things like your drinks and meals in cash so you know where your at and don’t get a surprise at the end of your stay.

Hopefully you will really enjoy your trip to Fiji, just remember to change some money into Fiji currency before you leave or at the airport when you arrive.
